Jefferson City, MO – Democrats in the Missouri House are unhappy with new rules implemented Thursday by the Republican majority.
The changes give House Speaker Rod Jetton and other GOP leaders more power in making committee appointments, as well as assigning things like office space and parking spots.
Rep. Rodney Hubbard (D-St. Louis) described the process as petty: "Mr. Speaker, I think there's a lot of hate-eration going on in this place today. There's a lot of side talk that is taking place.
"But when are we going to put the business of the people first?"
When it comes to committee assignments, Hubbard says his party has been treated unjustly.
But not all Democrats opposed the new rules. Representative Terry Young of Independence said his fellow party members were acting "purely partisan" by opposing the new rules. Several members of the Black Caucus also voted for the rule changes.
