Judge blocks Missouri campaign finance law

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, Mo. – A judge in Jefferson City temporarily blocked a new state law Monday that bans fundraising by lawmakers, statewide officials and candidates during the legislative session.

Cole County Judge Richard Callahan says a federal judge struck down a similar Missouri law in 1996.

The challenge was filed by a Webster Groves man who plans to run for the Legislature next year. In particular, he is taking issue with not being able to use his own money in the next few months.

Callahan also set a March hearing for a suit challenging the entire law.

Among other things, the measure also eliminated individual contribution limits.
