Trial over Missouri school funding begins

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO. – Opening statements and testimony began Wednesday in a lawsuit that claims Missouri's method of funding public schools is unfair and inadequate.

The lead attorney for the suing school districts is Alex Bartlett.

He told a Cole County judge that schools, both large and small, are hurting.

Assistant Attorney General Jim McAdams told the judge that the case is NOT about how much Missouri is spending on education, but whether the Legislature's funding mechanism violates the constitution.

He says it does not.

The trial could last six weeks, and could involve dozens of witnesses.
