St. Louis – A special advisory committee found that the St. Louis Public Schools cannot effectively oversee the education of its students.

The committee stopped short of recommending a full state takeover of the district, a fact which district superintendent Diana Bourisaw sees as a positive.

"There's a perception that state takeover involves lots of money to the district and that's certainly not the case," Bourisaw said. "I don't think the state would desire to take over St. Louis Public, we have a quality leadership team in place that's moving the district ahead and we'd like to continue."

The advisory committee released its findings to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Friday.

Among other options the committee recommended dissolving the current school board in favor of a transitional board comprised of appointees by the governor, mayor and board of Aldermen.

The state Board of Education plans to consider the recommendation at its meeting next month.
