chicago, Ill. – Chicago-based Boeing says a laptop with nearly 400,000 names and Social Security numbers - along with birth dates, home addresses and phone numbers - was stolen earlier this month.
It's the third time in just over a year that Boeing's had confidential information stolen. This time, a laptop containing information on 382,000 current and retired employees was lifted from an employee's car.
Boeing spokesman Tim Neale says the company is doing what it can to prevent another incident: "We've been working hard to make sure everybody in the company who deals with this kind of information know what the company's policy's are and how to protect the information.
" It's very unfortunate that it's happened again and very concerning.
Neale says the company is looking into new ways of identifying its employees instead of using social security numbers. He says Boeing will provide credit monitoring for the effected employees for the next three years.
