St. Louis – The bipartisan Iraq Study Group released its long-awaited report Wednesday. Among other things, the panel is urging the Bush administration to use diplomacy to stabilize Iraq and allow withdrawal of most combat troops by early 2008.

But Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says even though Iraq is in a civil war, the United States military is still obligated to help Iraqi leaders develop a stable society.

Powell be in town Thursday (12/8) for the St. Louis Speakers Series. He spoke last week with KWMU's Matt Sepic.

Powell says coalition forces were not prepared to control Iraq after they overthrew Saddam Hussein.
