St. Louis, MO – A group of prominent Catholics is coming out in favor of a proposed constitutional amendment that would protect stem cell research in Missouri.
The group, led by former US. Senator Tom Eagleton, e-mailed a two-page letter to fellow Catholics last week.
They said that they feel Amendment 2 strikes the proper balance between allowing research on stem cells for possible health benefits and maintaining ethical boundaries. Most of the group's 30-member steering committee is connected to Washington University.
Catholic bishops have urged parishioners to vote against the amendment, saying it would enshrine in the constitution the ability to clone human beings.
