Humane Society gets ownership of horses

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – The Humane Society of Missouri now owns the 24 horses and a hinny who survived an accident on Interstate 44 in September.

The agency has reached a deal with the insurance company that represents the original owner of the animals.

The Humane Society gets ownership in exchange for not trying to recover the more than 84-thousand-dollars that's been spent to treat the animals.

Earlene Cole is director of the Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, where the horses and donkey are being cared for

"Everyone's doing well," Cole said. "One of the horses did not make it. On October 19th, Darlan had to be euthanized due to complications from injuries she received in the wreck. But everyone else is doing well. Most of them we don't even have to have wraps on their legs. Their wounds are healed up or very close to healed up."

Thursday's announcement clears the way for adoption of the horses. Cole says that can begin within the next two weeks.
