St. Louis, MO – State, federal, and local officials will make damage assessments Monday in areas of Missouri hit Friday by storms. The storm generated about ten tornadoes and brought as much as a foot of rain to some parts.
The initial estimate is that nearly 400 structures were damaged or destroyed and at least ten people were injured, with the heaviest damage reported in Perry, Phelps, Iron and Madison counties. St. Francois, Crawford and Reynolds counties also were affected.
State emergency officials say the might request federal aid, if the damage is significant enough.
Gov. Matt Blunt also declared a state of emergency.
Most of the injuries were minor, though one man in northern Madison County was seriously injured when a tornado tossed him into a field.
Another twister almost leveled the small community of Crosstown in eastern Missouri's Perry County. The tornado destroyed 62 homes in the town of 200 and damaged another 40.
Two hundred buildings in the Phelps County town of St. James suffered minor damage, as did a manufacturing plant, a middle school and a Wal-Mart distribution center.
In Iron County, 31 buildings also saw damage and the New Madrid County town of Libourn saw 12 homes flooded.
Officials say thousands of people lost power, though officials couldn't get an accurate count because many of the stricken areas are served by rural electric cooperatives.
