Union, Mo. – Authorities Wednesday cast doubt on claims that the woman accused of slashing a young mother's throat and kidnapping her newborn had lost her own baby.

Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke says investigators are trying to determine whether Shannon Torrez was pregnant and lost a full-term baby before the kidnapping.

Torrez was charged Wednesday with kidnapping, assault and armed criminal action.

Torrez told investigators she delivered a stillborn baby Friday before attacking Stephenie Ochsenbine.

Toelke said investigators are searching for a dead infant to support her story but have not found anything.
