Soldier from Jackson, Mo. killed in Iraq

By AP/KWMU

Cape Girardeau, MO – The Pentagon says a soldier from southeast Missouri was killed this week in Iraq. Jeremy Shank, 18, was shot during a security patrol this week.

The Private First Class was from Jackson, Mo., near Cape Girardeau.

Shank was a member of the 25th Infantry Division's Second Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He entered the Army in May 2005.

Shank's father, James, told the Post-Dispatch that his son was trained to speak Arabic and was with a Stryker force. James Shank also says he disagrees with the U.S. policy in Iraq, saying U.S. troops are "dying for some unguided reason."

SOLDIER MEMORIAL

There will also be a visitation today (Fri.) and a funeral Saturday for a soldier from the southern Illinois town of West Frankfort. Matthew Vosbein, 30, died last week in a bombing in Iraq.
