Alton teachers reach tentative deal on new contract

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Teachers in the Alton School District might not go on strike next week, after all.

The teachers' union and district leadership met again Wednesday night and reached a tentative agreement.

School started this week for Alton students. But teachers had filed a strike notice, which meant they could walk off the job this coming Monday.

Now, they'll meet Monday to vote on the new proposal.

English teacher and local union president Brenda Powers says union leadership will recommend approval.

"The board came and met us part of the way and we met them part of the way," Powers said, in an interview. "And that little bit of movement really did make a difference, one that we thought was a pretty fair settlement for our members.

"It wasn't everything we wanted, I will admit that, but it wasn't everything the board wanted, either."

The impasse in talks had been over teacher pay. Details of the agreement, though, won't be released until next week.

The union represents 650 district employees, including about 470 teachers.
