Alton, Ill. – Today (Tuesday) is the first day of class for students in the Alton School District, but the students might only spend this week at school.
That's because teachers have rejected a contract offer and filed a strike notice. The earliest they can walk off the job is next Monday.
The impasse in negotiations has been over teacher pay.
Members voted 477-37 against the district's latest two-year contract proposal. It included base pay increases of 1%. The union is seeking 2% raises.
