St. Louis – Metro announced Monday that the eight-mile section between Forest Park and Shrewsbury will begin service on Saturday, August 26th.
After two days of free rides, the cost of a one-way Metrolink ticket will go up to $2, from $1.75.
But Metro president Larry Salci said the system will still not break even.
"No mass rapid transit system in the world pays for itself," Salci said. "These are all publicly subsidized enterprises. So Metrolink does very well here in St. Louis. We stand up very well against our peer cities of Pittsburgh, Denver, Dallas and the other cities that have similar systems."
The cross-county extension, as it's known, is at least $126 million over budget, and its opening is at least four months behind schedule.
