St. Louis – Ameren says high temperatures in the St. Louis area could mean a record for peak electricity usage.
The company is asking its customers to conserve energy by turning up thermostats and reducing appliance use.
But Ameren spokeswoman Erica Abbett said brownouts are not likely.
"We have plenty of capacity, both in our transmission system- the lines that carry the electricity--and our power plants that produce the electricity," Abbett said. "We have plenty of supply to meet this demand."
A year ago, Ameren hit an all-time peak of about 12,500 megawatts.
The company is able to generate 16,200 megawatts.
Abbett says recent storm damage has been repaired and did not diminish the system's capacity.
