State sues Rolla business for dumping old computers

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – The state of Missouri is suing a busniess near Rolla area, claiming it has allowed thousands of old computer monitors to pile up. The suit says the pile violates hazardous waste laws and creates a public nuisance.

Attorney General Jay Nixon mainly wants the Echo Valley site, as it's called, cleaned up. The business and property owners also could face thousands of dollars in fines.

The attorney general's office says the computer parts have piled up over several years, starting wtih an apparent attempt to run a recycling business, but it never got off the ground.

Disposing of old computers and other electronics is a growing problem because they contain hazardous materials like mercury and lead.
