Macomb, Ill. – Western Illinois University will start mailing letters today (Monday) to the thousands of people whose personal information was compromised by a hacker this month.
School officials say names, addresses, and Social Security numbers for as many as 240,000 people connected to WIU were affected. They don't know if the hacker viewed or copied the records, but so far there have been no reports of misuse.
The computer system holds credit card information for anyone who used the Web to buy items from the WIU's bookstore or who stayed in the hotel in the student union.
