St. Louis, MO. – St. Louis clergy, the ACLU and the NAACP say a new law requiring Missouri voters to have a government-issued photo I.D. to vote is unconstitutional.
Governor Matt Blunt signed the bill Wednesday.
Critics of the new law say the measure discriminates against the poor, elderly and disabled who may not have driver's licenses.
Republican supporters say the identification requirement is necessary to prevent voter fraud. But some St. Louis-area critics today questioned if fraud is rampant in Missouri.
St. Louis Representative Margaret Donnelly says some county clerks are expecting lines and chaos at the polls because of the requirement.
A legal challenge is expected soon.
