Fourth deer attack at SIU-Carbondale; deer killed this time
Carbondale, Ill. – There was another deer attack at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale this week, but this time the deer was killed.
A campus police officer shot the female deer Monday night after it threatened pedestrians and then attacked the officer. University officials say the officer got between the doe and a jogger to prevent an attack.
There were four attacks last year and three more last month by what experts believe was a doe protecting her newborn.
After getting between the jogger and deer, the officer turned away from the deer for a second, and when he looked back the deer was charging. The officer suffered arm injuries and wounded the deer with one shot. The animal was euthanized by wildlife officials on Tuesday morning.
Deer confronted four people last year, with most of the encounters happening in or near the campus' sprawling Thompson Woods. Just last month, three more pedestrians at SIU suffered minor injuries.
