Police find baby alive in dumpster

By AP, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – St. Charles police are investigating a woman after her newborn baby girl was found alive in a trash bin Thursday morning.

Police say the newborn is in critical condition. They say a 22-year-old St. Charles woman gave birth Thursday morning.

Medical workers who arrived at the trash bin first thought the child was dead, but then saw she was breathing. The girl's umbilical cord and placenta still were still attached. It's estimated that the infant was ten weeks from full term.

Authorities say before the newborn was found the mother sought medical help and her grandmother notified police.

The mother, who has not been identified, is at an area hospital.
