Jefferson City, MO – Boaters in Missouri would have to pay a little more to register their crafts, under legislation heading to Gov. Matt Blunt's desk. The Missouri House signed off on the plan Monday, which was the final approval needed in the General Assembly.
Part of the fee increase would be used to fund the Missouri State Water Patrol. Boat registration fees are paid every three years. For boats shorter than 16 feet, the fee would climb from $10 to $25. For boats 40 feet or longer, it would jump from $40 to $150.
Rep. Wayne Cooper (R-Osage Beach) says many members of the state Water Patrol leave for the higher salaries of state Highway Patrol troopers.
The fee is expected to bring in $3.1 million for the Water Patrol and $2 million for the state's general coffers.
