Nixon to file lawsuit over Taum Sauk

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO. – Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon says he's preparing a lawsuit against Ameren Corporation for its operations at the Taum Sauk reservoir before it collapsed in December.

Nixon told The Associated Press that Ameren emphasized profits over safety at the power plant and delayed critical repairs for months before the collapse to maximize income.

Ameren refused to comment on pending litigation from Nixon's office.

Nixon would not say if his lawsuit would be civil or criminal.

He said he is also investigating Ameren's bonus policy.

An AP investigation last week revealed that 60 percent of managers' operating bonuses are tied to profit, budget and production goals.

Twenty percent of bonuses are tied to avoiding serious accidents at work.
