Springfield, Ill. – Illinois lawmakers Thursday sent the governor legislation that would ban smoking in all college dormitories.
Businesses that are located in a dorm building would not be part of the ban; it would only apply to residential areas.
Supporters say smoking causes most dorm fires, adding that many colleges already have such bans. But critics say those decisions should be made at each campus.
The House passed the legislation by vote of 85-25. Rep. John Fritchey (D-Chicago) sponsored the plan; he says no college opposes the bill.
