Wentzville, MO. – Aldermen in Wentzville Monday night approved Wal-Mart's request to expand its store there.
Unions and a group called "Wake Up Wal-Mart" had opposed the move. About 200 people attended the meeting.
The 70,000 square foot expansion will allow the store to sell groceries. Construction is expected to begin within a month.
Opponents say Wal-Mart workers will earn about $4 per hour less than workers earn at Schnucks grocery stores. Wal-Mart store manager Mark Fanara says the $9.80 hourly pay is slightly higher than the company average for full-time employees.
