Jefferson City, MO – Missouri State Senators are considering whether lawmakers should need special permission to accept free lodging, travel, or tickets.
The measure proposes numerous changes in state laws on lobbying and campaign finance. The restriction would apply to members of the House and Senate, their families and their staffs.
No freebies could be accepted without prior approval from the House or Senate administration committee.
State Senator Charlie Shields (D-St. Josepho) says business can be done over a meal. But he adds it's hard to pretend that work is getting done during a game or concert.
The legislation is now in the full Senate.
Shields, the bill's sponsor, says he expects most opponents to zero in on the section limiting free travel, hotels and tickets to shows and sporting events.
