Part of Mississippi River closed to look for bridge painter

By AP/KWMU

Belleville, Ill. – The Coast Guard closed a four-mile section of the Mississippi River Tuesday to let teams look for the body of a construction worker. But there was still no sign of Jim Belfield.

The 39-year-old Potosi man and father of six was trying to save three co-workers who had fallen from the Jefferson Barracks Bridge.

The three were dangling by safety harnesses and were later pulled to safety, but Belfield fell in.

The bridge carries Interstate 255 traffic between south St. Louis County and Illinois.

Missouri patrolman Lou Amighetti said Tuesday would be the last day of full-time searches for Belfield's body, though more attempts will be made.
