Chicago, ILL. – The government is expected to rest its case this week against former Governor George Ryan.
Ryan and longtime friend Larry Warner face 22 charges including racketeering and fraud; the prosecution has been presentings its case for four months.
Only a few potential witnesses are left: An Internal Revenue Service expert on unsnarling tangled finances, two Springfield-based reporters, an FBI agent and possibly one of Ryan's sons-in-law.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Collins told the judge last week that the government hopes to rest its case by the end of the day Tuesday.
The former governor's chief defense counsel, Dan Webb, calls that date optimistic. The defense will then get a chance to present its case and it's not known how long that will take.
