St. Louis, MO. – American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Anthony Romero says the Bush Administration must be held accountable for torturing suspected terrorists.
Romero is in St. Louis to speak to the ACLU's regional chapter.
The ACLU is suing the administration over its treatment of a German man the
U.S. admits was mistakenly brought to an Afghani prison. The administration denies using torture.
But Romero points to the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, an issue that's again coming forth in the trial of Saddam Hussein.
It's more than a little ironic that as we fight this so-called war for freedom, some of the documents which are coming out from how we prosecuted that war seriously question and undermine America's commitment to its best values, Romero said. I think the American people deserve better.
A bill before Congress would impose uniform standards for interrogating prisoners.
