St. Louis, MO. – An effort to allow Missouri voters to decide the fate of stem cell research in the state received a boost today.

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has approved the format of an initiative petition. It would ask residents if the state's constitution should be amended to protect any stem cell research and treatments that are allowed by federal law.

The group pushing the amendment now must gather enough valid, about 145,000, to place the question on next November's statewide ballot.

The deadline to do so is May 9th.
