Some worry Medicaid cuts might increase homelessness

By Staff

Jefferson City, MO. – Governor Matt Blunt's Committee to End Homelessness is worried that Medicaid cuts could increase the number of homeless people in St. Louis and across Missouri.

There are about 1,700 homeless in the St. Louis area and more than 26,000 statewide.

Committee chairwoman Liz Hagermace says Governor Matt Blunt's Medicaid cuts could worsen the problem for the state's poor.

"One of the biggest issues in people about to lose their housing is they've had a major illness and they can no longer pay their rent, Hagermace said. They've opted to pay their healthcare instead.

A spokesman for the Governor disagrees, saying that the state still has a generous welfare system in place.
