St. Louis, MO – Democrats scored an upset in Tuesday's special election, when former Kirkwood School Board member Jane Bogetto bested Republican Moira Byrd in the race for State Representative in the 94th district.
Bogetto tallied 58% of a vote, a 16-point margin even she claims to have been surprised by.
Bogetto says she campaigned more against moves Republican Governor Matt Blunt has made instead of focusing directly on Byrd.
The election was called after Representative Richard Byrd died earlier this year. Byrd's district has for years gone Republican.
Elsewhere in Missouri, Republicans won two other special elections for the State House.
OTHER ELECTIONS
Tuesday's elections also saw St. Louis City voters easily approve borrowing $13 million to pay for upgrades to emergency equipment. The money might also be used to help upgrade flood walls along the Mississippi River.
All ballot questions in St. Louis County passed, except for one tax question in Crestwood and a proposition in Bella Villa.
A fire district question in Jefferson County also passed.
ARIZONA CITY COUNCIL
Howard Mechanic did not win a city council seat in Prescott, Arizona. He's the man who lived for nearly three decades as a fugitive from St. Louis before President Clinton pardoned him.
