Republican joins race to replace ousted alderman

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – A third candidate has joined the race for an empty seat on the St. Louis Board of Aldermen.

Republican Sharon Barnes hopes to take over the position that Tom Bauer once had.

Voters recalled Bauer in September. Much of the campaign to oust him focused on his support of eminent domain for a gas station.

She says she's favorable to new construction in the neighborhood. But she opposes eminent domain for private development. She also favors limiting tax abatements.

"Rather than making it the standard for every piece of construction that's put through here, it will be determined on a case-by-case basis," Barnes said. "Our ward is a desirable area to be, and no additional incentives are really needed."

Barnes is self-employed. If elected she'd be only the second Republican on the 28-member board.

Tom Bauer is trying to win his seat back as an independent. Twenty-fourth Ward Democrats have nominated electrician Bill Waterhouse.
