MidAmerica down to one airline

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – One of the two air carriers at MidAmerica Airport in the Metro East will soon file for bankruptcy.

TransMeridian Airlines has ended flights nationwide. That includes two trips a week from MidAmerica to Sanford, Florida.

Airport Director Tim Cantwell says the airline had problems overall. But its MidAmerica flights did fairly well.

"Having had such high load factors, I'm sure that the commercial industry is out there looking at this route," Cantwell said. "And I'm positively anticipating somebody coming in the next two to three weeks to identify themselves as wanting to take over that market."

Cantwell says TransMeridian does not owe the airport any money.

That was not the case with the last airline at MidAmerica that went belly-up.

Great Plains Airlines went bankrupt early last year. The carrier stuck St. Clair County with nearly $750,000 in unpaid loans.

Allegiant Air is the only airline left at MidAmerica. It operates four flights a week to Las Vegas.
