STL police officer resigns before facing Police Board

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – A St. Louis police officer accused of firing at a fleeing car has resigned. William Sarti was just about to go before the Police Board to discuss his fate.

Police Chief Joe Mokwa had recommended Sarti be fired for the incident last March.

Sarti, 22, and another officer fired 28 rounds into a car that had three children in it. The children were not hurt.

Sarti's lawyer says he believes Sarti would have won his case but that the officer's future with the St. Louis police was at a dead end.

Sarti had been with the force for six years when he and another officer fired 28 rounds at the car. The other officer, still in his probationary period, was fired.

The driver was Emanuel Khaafidh, 34, Pagedale, who was wounded while fleeing a traffic stop and a quarrel with police. His wife and their preschool children were not hurt.
