Jefferson City, MO – Legislation that would put new restrictions on abortion in Missouri passed the state Senate Thursday night and now heads to the House.
The 26-6 vote happened after 10 hours of debate.
The measure would let parents sue anyone who helps a minor get an abortion without the parents' consent. Another section restricts doctors' right to perform abortions anywhere in Missouri. They could perform abortions only if they have clinical privileges at a hospital within 30 miles that provides obstetric and gynecology services.
It's the centerpiece of the special session called by Governor Blunt on anti-abortion proposals that died in the regular session.
A similar bill was endorsed this week by a committee in the House. The House will take up the Senate bill on Monday.
