Maris family and A-B settle defamation suit

By AP/KWMU

Gainville, Fla. – The family of former home run king Roger Maris and Anheuser-Busch have settled a multibillion-dollar defamation lawsuit.

The lawsuit was related to the St. Louis-based brewer's termination of the family's beer distributorship.

The Marises won a $50 million jury award against the brewer in 2001 over a wrongful termination lawsuit. That case is now being appealed.

But in the meantime the family filed the defamation suit.

The sides did not disclose terms of the settlement in that case. It was reached as jurors deliberated for a second day following a three-week trial.

The company gave Maris the distributorship after he ended his career in 1968 with the St. Louis Cardinals, which it then owned. He died in 1985.
