Amvets conference begins today in Kansas City

By AP/KWMU

Kansas City, MO – More than 2,000 members of the veterans group Amvets will be in Kansas City this week for a national convention.

With 180,000 members and 1,300 service posts, Amvets is billed as the largest all-inclusive veterans service organization in the country. Its members include reservists, National Guardsmen and women.

One issue the group will discuss is the need for insurance that would provide immediate payments to service members and their families while wounded veterans recover.

Beryl Love, national programs director for the group, noted that fewer soldiers are dying because there is better armor to protect the head and chest. But he said more soldiers are losing limbs to home-made bombs.

The convention ends Saturday.
