St. Louis, MO – The home plate umpire at Thursday's Cardinals game, Rick Reed, was taken to a hospital during the game after he was hit in the head with a foul ball.

Reed left in the bottom of the fifth inning, complaining of dizziness and headaches. He was sent to a St. Louis hospital for observation after being examined by Cardinals team physician George Paleta.

The game resumed after a ten-minute delay; second base umpire Ted Barrett called balls and strikes for the rest of the game.

The Cardinals lost to the Pirates, 11-7.
