Carbondale, Ill. – Former Congressman Glenn Poshard wants to be the next President of Southern Illinois University.
But he'll have to resign his seat on the SIU Board of Trustees to apply; he sent his resignation Thursday to the governor. He has been serving as chairman of the board of trustees.
James Walker announced last week he'll retire as president next year.
Poshard, a Democrat, was a congressman for ten years and also ran for governor before being named to his alma mater's Board of Trustees.
The governor named Poshard to the board in January 2004, then reappointed him to a second term that expires in 2011.
Walker will have been SIU President for six years when he retires..
Poshard has a doctorate in education and worked as a teacher before being elected to Congress.
