Jefferson City, MO – Missouri's state Auditor, Claire McCaskill, may be reconsidering a run for U.S. Senate, just weeks after saying she's not interested.
Sources from the Democratic Party have told the Associated Press that McCaskill is expected to meet with party officials in Washington next week. They're expected to talk about a possible challenge to Republican Senator Jim Talent in 2006.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions are private.
Democrats have courted McCaskill for months, believing she's the best hope for denying Talent six more years.
Talent hasn't yet won a full, six-year Senate term. He was elected in 2002 to serve the final four years of a term originally won in 2000 by the late Gov. Mel Carnahan.
McCaskill narrowly lost the governor's race last year to Republican Matt Blunt. Calls to McCaskill's office seeking comment on a Senate race were not returned.
