Wildwood, MO – A soldier from the St. Louis suburb of Wildwood was killed on Friday during a training exercise in Arkansas.
Officials say they're investigating why Private Paul Varner, 20, was shot during a live-fire exercise at Fort Chaffee, Ark.
Varner attended Lafayette High School and would have been deployed to Afghanistan next year. Funeral arrangements are pending. Varner was among 2,000 soldiers of the Fourth Brigade, tenth Mountain Division that had traveled from Fort Polk, Louisiana, to Fort Chaffee.
The Army says the accidental shooting occurred during a "dismounted, live-fire exercise," but provided no other details.
