One Dead in Plane Crash in Festus

Festus, MO – A man from Mexico, Mo. died Wednesday when the small plane he was piloting crashed in Festus.

Authorities believe bad weather was the cause of the crash, which happened Wednesday afternoon.

Pilot Rodney Forbes, 40, took off fromthe Festus airport about 5:00 in a single-engine Cessna. A short time later, he turned the plane around.

The plane flipped as it tried to land, then crashed into the runway.

Forbes was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, Dan Varnell, 49, of Texas, is in serious but stable condition at St. John's Mercy Medical Center.

Winds were gusting up to 60 miles per hour at the time of the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
