Following Schiavo Death, MO Lawmakers Push for New Laws

By KWMU

Jefferson City, Mo. – The struggle over Terri Schiavo's life and death has led two Missouri legislators to propose laws dealing with end-of-life issues.

One offered earlier this month by State Senator John Loudon would allow the state to award custody of a patient in a persistent vegetative state to whomever would continue care if they don't have a living will.

The St. Louis County Republican says it's an issue of maintaining life.

"My legislation says if one side steps forward and says preserve life, let's err on the side of life," Loudon said.

The second bill was offered hours after Schiavo's death by Republican Representative Cynthia Davis of O'Fallon.

Davis' bill would require Missouri to continue caring for such patients unless a living will directed otherwise.

Democratic Representative Chuck Graham says the Republicans' agenda is misguided.
