SPringfield, MO – It's a boy for Missouri Governor and Mrs. Blunt. Their first child was born Wednesday night in Springfield, Mo.

William Branch Blunt is doing fine at 5-pounds-13-ounces. He'll be called by his middle name, Branch.

A spokesman says the 34-year-old governor is elated, while mother and son are both doing fine at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

William was born just after 7:00 p.m., measuring 19-and-a-half inches long.

Governor Blunt says his mother's family has been traced to a 16th-century Englishman named William Branch. One of his descendants was an ally of Thomas Jefferson and served as an early governor of Virginia.

Melanie Blunt and the newborn plan to remain in southwest Missouri for a while before joining the governor in Jefferson City.
