Springfield, Ill. – Smokers could find themselves less welcome in some Illinois communities if a legislative proposal becomes law.
It would give all cities the authority to ban smoking in public places like bars and restaurants. Currently only a few around the state can pass such ordinances.
While some business owners are concerned it would impact their bottom line, supporters of the measure disagree. Kathy Drea, with the American Lung Association, says studies show bars and restaurants don't lose customers when a smoking ban is in place.
"It's the tobacco industry that suffers. No one else suffers when these laws take effect," Drea said. "Their sales definitely do significantly decrease."
The measure is advancing in the Illinois senate. The Chicago suburb of Wilmette is the only Illinois city that prohibits smoking in any public place.
