War Opponents Wrapping Up Convention in St. Louis

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Opponents to the war in Iraq from all over the country will wrap up their gathering in St. Louis today (Monday).

Hundreds of groups who make up United for Peace & Justice have been crafting a plan for the upcoming year, as they try to get troops out of Iraq.

United for Peace & Justice protested the war last year at both the Republican and Democratic Conventions.

This year another demonstration is planned on March 19th, the second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

Lisa Fithian, from Austin, Tex. helped organize the gathering. She says one goal is for war opponents to network with each other and realize their commonalities.

One of United's goals for this year will be to raise awareness of how many National Guard troops are serving in Iraq. Organizers say too many families are broken up with the deployments of National Guardsmen, who are usually more used to responding to floods and tornadoes than fighting a war.

Actor Danny Glover is among those who spent the weekend in St. Louis to speak against the war.
