St. Louis, MO – Three people died in two car crashes just minutes apart on I-170 early Sunday morning. One of the dead is a former Bridgeton firefighter who had stopped to help.
In the first crash, two people died when a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into another car on I-170 in Berkeley.
Police say Damon Covington, 58, then stopped and was subsequently hit by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver.
Police say the driver could face criminal charges, once blood alcohol tests come back.
Six other people were injured in the crashes. The two who died in the first crash were Wilson Gordon, Jr., 23, who was driving the wrong way, and Michael Dillick, 21, who was driving the van into which Gordon drove.
Toxicology tests are also pending on Gordon - the apparent wrong-way driver.
