Illinois lawmakers are close to adding to state law a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The legislation has passed the state House before, but it has always hit a roadblock in the Senate. Monday night, the Senate narrowly approved the measure, with no votes to spare.
The controversial measure draws opposition from people who say it will lead to special privileges for gays and lesbians.
