Maryland Heights to Get New City Hall

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Maryland Heights will be getting a new government center soon.

The St. Louis suburb was incorporated nearly 20 years ago, but city spokesman Paul Thompson says workers have outgrown the converted warehouse space that's been serving as city hall.

"We have kind of a cubicle city," Thompson said. "Everyone, with very few exceptions, works out of little cubes. The police department has big problems with evidence storage-the kinds of things you have to keep around for a long time."

The new building will be a half block from the old one, just off Dorsett road. Bonds financed with casino revenue are paying for the entire $15.5 million construction cost.

Site preparation work has already been done, and officials hope to start construction in the spring. Building work will take the better part of a year.
