Venice, ILl. – Officials say the 95-year-old bridge which links St. Louis with Venice, Ill. will become toll-free. The bridge has been closed since 2001, when the village of Venice ran out of money to maintain it.
On Wednesday, A Missouri court allowed the city of St. Louis to foreclose on the bridge for about $500,000 in back taxes owed by Venice. St. Louis then immediately gave Illinois control of the bridge.
Repairs will cost Illinois $46 million. State Rep. Jay Hoffman says work will begin early next year.
